Shrek Audition Requirements:

All actors must be in 3rd grade to 12th grade to be eligible to audition.
Prepare approximately 32 bars of an uptempo musical theatre song in the style of the show for the primary audition. Those interested in the roles of Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, Dragon and Farquaad may want to bring a second, contrasting (ballad) 32-bar selection as well (optional, not required). PLEASE DO NOT SING A SONG FROM THE SHOW. Bring sheet music in your key; an accompanist will be provided. A CD or MP3 track with accompaniment only is also acceptable, provided it is edited and cued correctly. No a cappella auditions. Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes, as auditioners may be asked to learn a short dance/movement combination; there will also be cold reading from the script. All those auditioning are encouraged to provide a résumé of their onstage experience and training or include this information on their audition form, and bring a headshot (if available - this does not have to be a professional photo). Digital photos of all actors will also be taken at the auditions. Please bring a list of all potential conflicts including school events, travel, etc. for the time period January 12 - April 30. Any conflicts with the posted schedule must be discussed with the Directors and agreed to before casting can be confirmed.

If cast, tuition fees and costume fees apply.

Rehearsals will typically be held Tuesdays 4:30pm to 6:30pm, Fridays 4:30pm to 8:30pm and Sundays 1:pm to 6pm. Not every actor will be called for every rehearsal.

Performances tentatively scheduled for April 17-19, 2015 (may change due to venue availability).

All roles will be double cast to the extent that we are able. This show is a great vehicle for both experienced actors and those new to CenterStage. We look forward to meeting you at auditions!

Shrek Character Breakdown:

SHREK (Male, High Baritone / Tenor, A2-G#4) - Our story's title character. A big, green, ultimately misunderstood ogre who lives alone in a swamp. He embarks on a journey to rid his land of fairytale creatures and, along the way, falls in love with Fiona. Begins as a grumpy hermit, but reveals his layers and eventually becomes the hero. Scottish brogue. Excellent singer and actor.
PRINCESS FIONA (Female, Soprano / High Belter, F3-G5) - The beautiful princess of Far-Far-Away, she transforms into an ogre every night when the sun sets. Rescued by Shrek and eventually falls in love with him. Quirky, blunt, and multitalented, she is not an ordinary princess. Excellent singer and actor with great comic timing.
DONKEY (Male or Female, High Baritone / Tenor or Alto with High Belt, C3-B4) - A talking donkey who joins Shrek on the run from Farquaad's guards. Quite the chatterbox, he is not deterred by Shrek's looks and practically forces himself into his good graces. Easily frightened and pushy, but also an optimist with heart. Excellent singer and comic actor with a huge personality.
LORD FARQUAAD (Male, High Baritone, B2-D5) - The comically short, ruthless ruler of Duloc. He is in search of a princess to marry so that he can become king. Has an intensely unfair bias against fairytale creatures that stems from a resentment of his father. Self-absorbed, lonely, and cruel. Excellent singer and comic actor. Actor must be able to play this role on his knees for the whole show.
DRAGON (Female, Alto with Big Belt, F3-Eb5) - A dragon that has been charged with guarding Princess Fiona in her isolated castle. She eventually falls in love with Donkey and attempts to keep him there forever. Imposing and flirtatious, but tired of her job as the glorified baby-sitter. She sings to Donkey in the first act, then appears in the second act to take out Lord Farquaad and is featured in the finale number "I'm a Believer.".
GINGY (Male or Female, Any Age - Any Vocal Part) - A gingerbread cookie initially kidnapped by Lord Farquaad. His/her wit and resolution help him both avoid trouble and inspire the rest of the fairytale creatures. This character is sometimes portrayed with a puppet, which may be voiced and operated by actor appearing as Sugar Plum Fairy.
SUGAR PLUM FAIRY (Female, Alto with belt) - has featured lines and solos in "Story of My Life" and "Freak Flag,"
PINOCCHIO (Male or Female, Tenor voiced entirely in falsetto or Soprano / Alto) - The leader of the fairytale creatures. Plenty of sass with a penchant for lying, he leads the troupe of Fairytale Creatures in the musical numbers "Story of My Life" and "Freak Flag."

QUEEN LILLIAN (Female, Alto or Soprano) - Fiona's mother and Queen of Far-Far-Away. Sings a beautiful duet with King Harold to young Fiona in the opening number, "Big, Bright, Beautiful World." May double in the ENSEMBLE.
